STEVENS POINT – Menomonie’s Brooks Brewer put the finishing touches on a play that is certain to become the stuff of legend in the record book of the UW-Stout Polytechnic football program.
Brewer scored the touchdown on a 99-yard interception pick-6 in a 45-2 blowout win at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Oct. 10. But Brewer had plenty of help from his teammates and won’t even receive credit for an interception on the play.
With Stout leading 24-0 on the final play of the first half, Dawson Goodman picked off the Pointers’ desperation heave at the 1-yard line and raced up the sideline to midfield, where he cut across the field and lateraled to brother Gavin Goodman who ran 30 yards up the 25 before giving the ball to Jesse Ellis who ran the next 15 yards before finding Brewer, a senior team captain, who carried the ball the rest of the way for the score.
The interception return sets a UW-Stout school record, topping a 95-yard effort, a mark that was set three times – Wallace Buffmire vs. Eau Claire (1921), Richard McNamara vs. Eau Claire (1951) and Luke Steffen vs. Upper Iowa (2006). The play is the second-longest play in school history, topped only by Glen Harke’s 102-yard kickoff return in 1959 against Winona State.
The score was Brewer’s second as a Blue Devil. Last season, Brewer had a pick-6 in the season opener against the University of Dubuque.
Historically, Stout’s longest plays from scrimmage were 98 yards, a mark set four times, once on a rushing play and three times on a passing play.
