MENOMONIE – The public is invited to participate in one of two BadgerCare Summits happening Tues Sept 1, 6-8pm at Glen Park Pavilion, River Falls, and Thur Sept 3, 6-8pm at Flag Hill Pavilion in Irvine Park, Chippewa Falls.
Sponsored by GRO-WW, Grassroots Organizing Western Wisconsin, the purpose is to rally together those who are ready to share their stories about why now is the time to energize people to push legislative leaders to expand BadgerCare.
As a nonpartisan, grassroots organization, GRO-WW focuses on issues that matter to the general public, regardless of political party. They focus on, and reach out to, any and all who care deeply about the issues at hand. Trained deep canvassers are talking to people in River Falls, Chippewa Falls, and Menomonie about how access to medical care has affected them.
Nita Fitzgerald, one of the canvassers shared, “I had breast cancer in 2011, and had the huge benefit of excellent care because of good insurance. I knew others who had similar issues and did not have insurance. Instead of a smooth road to recovery, they suffered lengthy healing. As a canvasser, I hear from others, like myself, who have good access. 100% of them want it for everyone!”
“This energy is what we hope to cultivate as we share and organize at the summits”, says John Calabrese, Organizer for GRO-WW.
The purposes of the summit include 1) to bring Wisconsinites together to focus on the importance of Badger Care expansion; 2) to identify and engage people in making a hopeful plan of action that has coherent demands, targets, and timeline; 3) to shine light on the stakes of what is possible with an organized strategy to achieve one of GRO-WW’s top goals, expansion of BadgerCare.
“We have what’s likely a once in a lifetime opportunity to win a BadgerCare Public option,” Calabrese said. “This would double the threshold at which people qualify for it, covering tens of thousands more Wisconsinites. It would allow people to use ACA subsidies to buy into it, and would allow businesses/non-profit’s of 50 employees or less to buy into it.”
