LA CROSSE – Menomonie High School qualified 13 athletes in eight different events to the WIAA State Track and Field Meet June 5-6 at UW-La Crosse’s Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. The Mustangs qualified nine girls and four boys to the event.

Lauren McCalla and Bree Barfknecht will be competing in two events, while Mia Lambrigtsen, Bennett Schmitt, Addison Schuler, Alexis Thalacker, Lauren Ohman, Isabel Sorensen, Ellie Arndt, Evan Olson, Owen Pelzel, Luke Ray and Noah Winder will be appearing in one event.

McCalla is the top seed in both the 800-meter run and the 1600-meter run. The senior will be looking for her first state track and field individual championship to go along with the state cross country title she won last fall.

Barfknecht will be competing in the 800m where she is the fifth seeded runner. Barfknecht is also a member of the 4×800-meter relay team. Joining Barfknecht on the relay team are Schuler, Thalacker and Ohman. The MHS relay team is seeded fifth. McCalla and Schmitt are listed as alternates.

Schmitt will be competing in the 3200-meter run, Sorensen in the triple jump and Arndt in the discus. Olson, Pelzel, Ray and Winder will be competing in the boys 4×800-relay. Logan Topper and Karter Livingston are listed as alternates.

Sectional Results
The Menomonie girls placed second behind Stevens Point at the sectional meet May 29 at Marshfield. The boys placed 12th.

Lauren McCalla claimed sectional titles in both the 800-meter run and 1,600-meter run. McCalla won the 800 in 2 minutes, 12.00 seconds and followed with a victory in the 1,600 in 4:45.79. Teammate Bree Barfknecht gave Menomonie a one-two finish in the 800, placing second in 2:15.46.

The Mustangs also received runner-up performances from Bennett Schmitt in the 3,200, where she finished in 11:09.61, and the 4×800 relay team. Addison Schuler, Barfknecht, Alexis Thalaker and Lauren Ohman combined to win the relay in 9:11.17.

Menomonie added third-place finishes from Mia Lambrigtsen in the 100 (12.70), Isabel Sorensen in the triple jump (34 feet, 11½ inches) and Ellie Arndt in the discus (131-9).

Other Mustang competitors included the 4×400 relay team of Schuler, Ohman, Claire Mikesell and Barfknecht, which placed fifth in 4:07.16, and Evelyn Doyle, who tied for sixth in the high jump at 4-10.

Menomonie’s 4×100 relay team of Rachel Riepl, Ayala Armani, Sydney Norby and Lambrigtsen finished eighth in 51.06, while the 4×200 relay team of Callie Travis, Mari Ramirez, Ohman and Lambrigtsen was eighth in 1:58.76. Armani also placed eighth in the triple jump at 32-10.75.

For the boys,Evan Olson, Owen Pelzel, Luke Ray and Noah Winder combined to place second in 7 minutes, 58.26 seconds in the 4×800-meter relay and advance to the state meet.

The Mustangs also received a sixth-place finish from Javan Butler in the 100-meter dash in 11.06 and an eighth-place finish from Alexander Heckendorf in the 200 in 23.08. Alexander Heckendorf joined Andrew Heckendorf, John Gruber and Javan Baker on the 4×200 relay team, which placed sixth in 1:31.58.

In the field events, Preston Witter finished seventh in the discus with a throw of 148 feet, 9 inches, while Myka Fox placed eighth in the high jump at 5-6.
