MENOMONIE – The Menomonie boys and girls track and field teams will send a large group of athletes to the WIAA Division 1 sectional Friday at D.C. Everest after strong performances Tuesday at the regional meet in Menomonie.
The top four finishers in each event qualified for the sectional meet at D.C. Everest High School in Schofield, with a trip to the WIAA state meet on the line. The state meet is scheduled for June 5-6 at UW-La Crosse’s Veteran Memorial Stadium.
The Menomonie boys were led by Javan Butler, who captured a regional championship in the 100-meter dash. The Mustangs also claimed a regional title in the 3,200-meter relay as Owen Pelzel, Evan Olson, Luke Ray and Noah Winder finished first.
Additional boys qualifiers included Andrew Heckendorf in the 200-meter dash, Preston Witter in the shot put and Myka Fox in the high jump.
Menomonie’s 800 relay team of John Gruber, Alex Heckendorf, Andrew Heckendorf and Butler also advanced to sectionals while breaking the school record.
The Mustangs girls team qualified athletes in all four relays along with numerous individual events.
Relay qualifiers included Addison Schuler, Lauren Ohman, Lexi Thalacker, Bree Barfknecht, Callie Travis, Mari Ramirez, Mia Lambrigtsen, Rachel Riepl, Ayala Armani, Sydney Norby and Claire Mikesell.
Individual sectional qualifiers for the girls included Lambrigtsen in the 100 dash; Lauren McCalla in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs; Barfknecht in the 800; Bennett Schmitt in the 3,200; Isabel Sorensen in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and triple jump; Ramirez in the 100 hurdles; Evelyn Doyle in the high jump; Armani in the triple jump; and Ellie Arndt in the discus.
The Menomonie girls were edged by the closest of margin in the team standings by Eau Claire Memorial, which scored 127 points to Menomone’s 126. The boys finished seventh. Below are the results of all of the Menomonie competitors.
