MENOMONIE – Hosford-Chase American Legion Post 32 invites veterans, first responders, families, and members of the community to gather on Friday, September 11, for a community remembrance marking the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
The event will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Shirley Doane Senior Center, 1412 6th St E, Menomonie.
The gathering will have an informal, come-and-go format. Community members are welcome to attend the entire morning or join the remembrance for whatever portion their schedules allow.
Throughout the morning, those attending will pause for 25 seconds of silence representing the 25 years since September 11, 2001, at six nationally recognized times associated with the events of that morning:
8:46 a.m. – Flight 11 strikes the North Tower of the World Trade Center
9:03 a.m. – Flight 175 strikes the South Tower
9:37 a.m. – Flight 77 strikes the Pentagon
9:59 a.m. – South Tower collapses
10:03 a.m. – Flight 93 crashes near Shanksville, Pennsylvania
10:28 a.m. – North Tower collapses
(The nationally familiar Eastern Time clock times associated with the events will be used rather than converting them to Central Time).
Following the final historical observance, a seventh moment of silence will be observed honoring first responders, rescue and recovery workers, survivors, community members, and others who later died from 9/11-related illness and injury.
Between the moments of silence, attendees will be invited to visit with one another and share memories of where they were and what they remember from September 11, 2001. Cards will also be available for participants to write messages of appreciation to veterans, current service members, and first responders.
“This is intended to be a simple community gathering where people can remember together,” said Jon Brutlag, Commander of Hosford-Chase American Legion Post 32. “Twenty-five years later, many of us can still remember exactly where we were that morning. We also want to recognize the service and sacrifice that followed September 11 and take some time to thank those who continue to serve our communities and our country today.”
There is no need to attend the entire event. Those planning to attend are encouraged to RSVP for planning purposes.
As part of its continuing outreach, Post 32 has also created a short Veteran & First Responder Contact Information Form to help identify veterans, current service members, and first responders who may appreciate receiving cards or other messages of recognition from the Post. Information may be submitted by the individual or by a family member, friend, neighbor, coworker, or fellow veteran.The contact form is not a membership application or a Veteran Spotlight/story submission. Participants are encouraged to provide only information they know and are comfortable sharing.
