Menomonie High School Football - 1922
MENOMONIE — With the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings reporting to training camp this week, the familiar anticipation of football season is once again in the air.
That preseason energy extends to the local level, where Menomonie High School and UW-Stout are finalizing preparations for the upcoming fall. Menomonie recently updated its athletics website with a more user-friendly design. Athletic director Matt Riley said the revamped site — produced by PlayonSports — has been a work in progress throughout the summer. He noted that while a few issues remain, the site should be fully up to date within the next couple of weeks.
In the spirit of football history, longtime broadcaster Chad Zutter — the “Voice of the Mustangs” since 2019 — recently shared a draft copy of his new book, Menomonie High School Football History & Record Book: 130 Years of Menomonie Football. Frustrated by the lack of centralized information on the team’s past, Zutter compiled season-by-season schedules dating back to 1895, records against opponents, and a narrative chronicling the program’s evolution. The 40-page book is expected to be available for purchase on Amazon in early August.
Among the historical gems Zutter uncovered was a pair of 1906 games between Menomonie High School and the “Manual Training team,” believed to be the precursor to what is now UW-Stout. Menomonie won the first contest 6-0 on Oct. 20, with the teams playing to a 0-0 tie on Nov. 17.
As for the present, Menomonie High School football will report in early August and open the 2025 season at home against Eau Claire North on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs travel to Marshfield the following Thursday and host Hudson on Friday, Sept. 5 to kick off Big Rivers Conference play. Homecoming is set for Friday, Sept. 26 against Eau Claire Memorial, and the regular season will conclude Friday, Oct. 17 at home against Chippewa Falls. The WIAA playoffs begin Friday, Oct. 24 and culminate Nov. 21 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.
UW-Stout reports in mid-August and begins its season with home games against the University of Dubuque (Sept. 6) and Wartburg College (Sept. 13), both kicking off at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils begin WIAC play on the road at UW-Eau Claire on Oct. 4 and will host UW-Stevens Point for Homecoming on Oct. 25. Stout wraps up its regular season Nov. 15 at home against UW-River Falls.
